Brian Caldwell Designing New Anamorphics
Brian Caldwell, designer of the Metabones Speed Booster, revealed today that he's at work designing 1.79x anamorphic lenses. This news, sure to please owners of the Lumix GH5, comes on top of yesterday's announcement by Panasonic that the massive firmware update v.2, due out in September, will have in-body anamorphic de-squeeze. At the moment however,... Continue Reading →

A Brief Look at the Rotolight Neo LED Light
To the best of my knowledge, nobody in the online filmmaking community has discussed or tested the Rotolight Neo, even though it is marketed to both photographers and videographers. On the other hand, small, rectangular, credit card-sized lighting solutions by companies like Aputure seem to be very popular. I'm guessing it's because the Neo is... Continue Reading →

Blackmagic Video Assist ProRes 1080p
I've been shooting at the Saigon Central Post Office with my new BMD Video Assist and the ProRes 1080p files look gorgeous. It does require a bit more file space than the G85 4K files, however - one 64GB card fills up in around an hour. I should be sharing a new video in the... Continue Reading →
Tilta Follow Focus – The Ultimate Accessory?
We're up to nine pounds now, kids.
Rig Out Your Camera!
Even to those who prefer shooting with DSLRs or mirrorless, I'd still recommend rigging your camera out - I mean, get yourself a cage and a monitor, not a hunking 7" one, but a 5" screen. You'll be able to compose better, the color and contrast will be much more accurate than the lousy 3" LCD... Continue Reading →
Tuba Cage PA-1, Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro, BMD Video Assist
We're up to six pounds already... Anyhow, the past couple of weeks or so have been pretty crazy... what with my RodeLink malfunctioning (I think the micron adapter needs replacing, it's still in the shop), LUT Utility suddenly showing watermarks in FCP (I had to delete the plug-in, download and reinstall), then not being able... Lumix G85 Extravaganza Graded With Leeming LUT and Leeming LUT Quickie
I did a quick grade on the clips of the last video I uploaded. Hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/Z-liz1ZB7qU
Comparison: With and Without the Leeming LUT
I shot a short clip this morning using Cinelike D, exposed normally, imported it into Final Cut, and added the Leeming LUT with a -4 reduction in highlights. Which image has more accurate skin tones, in your opinion? Let me know! (1) SOOC (2) + Leeming LUT
ETTR Test II
Here's another test of ETTR, again in available light, along with screen shots of the histograms and vector scopes. Skin tones are pretty much spot on for both the ETTR shot and the clip that has been underexposed. To my way of thinking, the vector scope is showing far greater color information in the ETTR shot, and... Continue Reading →
Can Neat Video Reduce Macroblocking When Uploading to YouTube?
The short answer is 'no'. Neat Video dramatically reduces noise in the original clip, but macroblocking is still present in YT. https://youtu.be/6yP2wbXPzFs
ETTR: Noise, Dynamic Range and Skin Tones
I just did a very quick test with the Lumix G85 in natural light which leaves little doubt that there is greater dynamic range and less noise in the shadows when exposing to the right. Colors are a little trickier, first of all, because I'm not a professional colorist, so I couldn't exactly match the ETTR... Continue Reading →
Over One Month to Get V-Log
It took almost five ridiculously long weeks for Lee Zavitz of ZedPro Media to get V-Log for his Lumix GH5. Not that most of us need it anyway.
