Andy Munitz, Professional Audio and PVM-X Series Monitor Sr. Product Manager, Sony, talked with ProductionHUBTV about the PVM 4K HDR monitors during lockdown.
“We realized that in the world of monitoring that we’re in today – and certainly if production 4K is really prevalent – and so we needed this monitor to be able to do complete 4K as well as HDR. And in the realm of HDR, we didn’t want to just have a monitor that could just do very bright specular highlights, for example, or a very limited area of a screen could reach 1,000 nits. We wanted to have a monitor that could do 1,000 nits capability in HDR across the entire field of view, just like the HX310. And that is what we have accomplished with the new PVM-X series. Now, you might go, ‘Why 1,000 nits across the entire screen?’ but in actuality, there many kinds of scenes that could benefit from that. Not only a snow-filled field or a beach view or something like that, but certainly a very bright sky filled with clouds and all that kind of stuff. We’ve done some early demos of the prototypes of these monitors and when we put up a complete white field on the monitor and run it at 1,000 nits people go ‘Wow, you can almost just get a suntan off of that stuff!’ Not really, obviously, but it is very bright and that’s the way we think that HDR monitoring needs to be.”
