First model shoot with the Great Joy 85mm T2.9

Not great art, but here are a couple clips from our very first model shoot with the Great Joy 85mm T2.9 1.8X anamorphic lens. What we like: the lens is solidly built, fit and finish are excellent, the aperture and focus rings are smooth with just the right amount of resistance, it’s got markings in both metric and imperial, pleasing rendition of out of focus areas, sharp wide open without being clinically so, and of course, the low price. What we don’t like: T2.9 is a touch slow, though a faster aperture would have resulted in a larger, heavier, costlier instrument. If anyone’s interested in some R3D RAW files to play with, just let us know. Special thanks to Rose!

Details: RED Komodo 6K, Kolari ND filter, R3D HQ 6K 4:3, T2.9 40 FPS @ ISO 800. Noise reduction in post: Temporal NR, Luma 1, Chroma 1.

  1. I ordered the 50mm as it’s currently half off. I know it’s inferior to the 85mm which in my mind is variable diopter design and 85mm but I might get cucked by the import duties and comparing to Sirui even at the same price it’s much more versatile as it’s a EF/PL mount when I have a Z9. No one buys 3rd party Z glass.
