Upload HDR Video Directly To Instagram Reels From An iPhone

To upload HDR videos directly to IG from an iPhone, set Media quality in Instagram to Upload at highest quality, in the camera app, enable HDR Video, confirm that your Facebook and Instagram accounts are connected, turn off the phone’s auto-brightness setting and record HEVC at 4K 30 fps. Disable True Tone. Using AirDrop with older devices may result in HDR being converted to SDR.

“[C]are should be taken when you AirDrop the Dolby Vision file to older Apple devices (e.g. 2017 model year or earlier) as depending on the OS versions the file may be transformed to SDR. For most use cases this is useful as it ensures correct playback regardless of where the video is used, but when the file is transformed into SDR during file transfer your working space will be limited to an SDR space.” – Dolby Professional

Note: Last year, Meta made a big announcement, saying that they were bringing HDR to Reels, but most IG content creators are unable to take advantage of it, the reason being that Meta prioritizes encoding according to a cost/benefit model based on predicted watch time.

1080p will work as well
This step is optional. Because we also watch a lot of Netflix and YouTube PQ HDR content at home, which look best with brightness set higher than determined by the auto-brightness control, we prefer to adjust brightness levels manually.

For professional applications, turn on Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb to avoid interruptions.
