Social Media and Instant Messaging Apps That Support Dolby Vision

As of last month, here’s a list of social media and instant messaging platforms around the world that currently support Dolby Vision.

To enjoy Dolby Vision content, your playback device must support Dolby Vision.

Since the iPhone 12, the first mobile device to record directly in Dolby Vision, Apple has continued to expand support for creating and playing back Dolby Vision experiences in its latest versions of mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers and monitors.

In the Android ecosystem, consumers can create and playback videos in Dolby Vision with certain models from VivoOppoXiaomi and OnePlus.

Vimeo

Vimeo is an online video-sharing and streaming platform that allows users to upload, share, and view videos. It has become known for its focus on high-quality video content, making it a popular choice for filmmakers, artists, and businesses looking to showcase their work or products. It is often used by creators and businesses to host and distribute videos, from short films and music videos to educational content and marketing materials.

Since 2021, Vimeo offers support for Dolby Vision playback on Apple devices.

Messages

Apple’s Messages is an instant messaging and SMS/MMS software from Apple. It is included in the macOS and iOS operating systems and integrated with Facetime. Until Mac OS X 10.7, the program was called iChat. Messages supports sharing Dolby Vision content when the video is sent as iMessage from Apple to Apple devices.

Moj

Moj is a short-video sharing app developed by ShareChat, an Indian social media platform. Moj is designed to provide a platform for users to create, share, and discover short video clips. It is quite similar in functionality to TikTok, allowing users to add music, effects, and filters to their videos.

In 2023, Moj announced that it will team up with Dolby to bring Dolby Vision to their platform. Moj users can record videos in Dolby Vision using compatible iOS or Android devices. They can then upload these videos to the Moj platform to share content in Dolby Vision with a wider audience.

WeChat

WeChat or Weixin in Chinese is a Chinese instant messaging, social media and mobile payment app developed by Tencent. WeChat has been called China’s “app for absolutely everything” and a “super app” because it offers a wide range of features. WeChat offers text messaging, hold-to-talk voice messaging, broadcast messaging, video conferencing, video gaming, mobile payment, photo and video sharing, and location sharing. WeChat supports sharing and playback of Dolby Vision HDR content.

DingTalk

DingTalk is an enterprise communication and collaboration platform developed by Alibaba Group. Available on mobile devices and desktops, DingTalk provides secure data exchange and ensures the protection of messages and other sensitive data. Companies can access various apps on the platform to extend their functionalities. DingTalk is enabled in Dolby Vision.

QQ 

Tencent QQ, also known as QQ, is an instant messaging software service and web portal developed by Chinese technology company Tencent. QQ provides services such as online social games, music, shopping, microblogging, movies, and group and voice chat software. QQ is enabled in Dolby Vision.

Bilibili

Bilibili, is a popular Chinese online entertainment and video-sharing platform. Launched in 2009, Bilibili initially focused on anime, comics, and gaming-related content, but it has since expanded to encompass a wide range of videos, including user-generated content, live streaming, and educational material.

Bilibili is known for its active and engaged community of users, particularly among China’s younger generation. Users on the platform can upload, share, and comment on videos, as well as participate in discussions and live events. The platform has also become a hub for content related to gaming, esports, music, and a variety of subcultures.

In 2021, Dolby joined hands with bilibili and announced bilibili as the world’s first video platform that allows users to share and view videos in Dolby Vision HDR. 

Weibo

Weibo is a prominent Chinese social media platform often described as China’s equivalent of “X”. Weibo provides users with a microblogging platform to share short text-based posts, images, videos, and links.

Weibo allows users to follow other users, celebrities, news organizations, and brands, similar to how “X”works. It has become a popular platform for real-time news updates, discussions, and social interactions. Weibo has a vast and active user base in China and it’s commonly used by individuals, influencers, businesses, and government entities for communication, marketing, and sharing information.

Starting in early 2023, the Weibo mobile app now supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. This will allow users to share and enjoy videos in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, further enhancing the audiovisual experience on social media.
