The MicroLED Industry Association (MIA) has published MicroLEDs 2023: State of the industry and future roadmap, a non-member summary of the full document, which paints a bleak picture for those of us who were hoping to snatch a 77” microLED TV before being dispatched to an assisted living residence.
MicroLED Market and Industry Landscape
Mass production is still years away with several unsolved challenges to overcome. Despite billions of dollars already invested in R&D in recent years, the state of the MicroLED market is still quite preliminary. Currently, a small number of displays are produced commercially, all targeting three markets:
- Microdisplays, or near-eye displays
- Displays meant for smartwatches or other wearable solutions
- Ultra large area TV and signage displays
Albeit counterintuitive, it is easier and more cost effective for the MicroLED industry to manufacture displays that are either very small or very large. “in-between” sizes tend to be more challenging. Looking at the whole of 2023, it can be estimated that the number of produced MicroLED TVs or MicroLED signage displays does not even reach 1,000.
Glancing at the roadmap, it would appear that mass production of affordable consumer TVs will not come until well beyond 2033.
there definitely needs to be more mini-LED monitors, PA32UCX and UCG also the Dell U3221Q with 2000 zones. I bought mine early but anyone today is buying quite old tech which should be deprecated and replaced by something that’s atleast brighter or more zones.
