HLG For Social Media Using MacBook Pro With Apple Silicon: DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 Settings

The following are our preferred project settings for delivering HLG HDR to YouTube.

1. Display HDR Video (P3-ST2084)

2. Preferences. Decode Options. Decode H.264/H.265 using hardware acceleration.

3. Preferences. Use 10-bit precision in viewers if available. Use Mac display color profiles for viewers.

4. Color Management settings. Color science may be DaVinci YRGB (for a node-based workflow), DaVinci YRGB Color Managed or DaVinci Resolve Color Managed with Automatic Color Management. Timeline color space here is DaVinci WG/Intermediate because we’re working with Cullen Kelly’s LUTs, but it could be the native log color space of the camera (e.g. S-Log3/S-Gamut3.cine, etc.) as well. The output color space should be Rec.2020 ST2084 1000 nits.

5. DaVinci YRGB Color Managed with automatic color management will work, too.

6. Be sure to enable Dolby Vision. Mastering display settings: 1000-nit, BT2020, D65, ST2084, Full

7. Export Settings. Format: QuickTime. Codec: H.265. Check ‘use hardware acceleration if available.’ Quality: we prefer 80,000 Kb/s. Encoding Profile: Main 10.

8. Export settings. Data Levels: Auto. Dolby Vision Profile 8.4.

9. The video will be recognized as HLG in apps that don’t support Dolby Vision, such as Instagram and YouTube, as well as on non-Dolby Vision playback devices like the Samsung S90C QD-OLED pictured here.
