Gerald Undone’s a7s III Exposure Settings (in HDR)

We put Gerald Undone’s recommended exposure settings for S-Log3 to the test! He suggests setting C1 to Std+Range 55% for 18% gray, then using C2 Lower Limit 94+ to check for highlight clipping, resulting in an ETTR of +1.66. Previously, we just used the C2 setting by itself but often found it difficult to recover highlight detail.

1. Exposure: Std+Range 55 +/-1, 18% gray card, ETTR +1.66 stops.

2. Using the color wheels, we placed white at 200 nits, gray at 26 nits and black near 0 nits.

3. Adjusting white balance with temperature and tint controls.

4. Same as above, showing mask applied to the white target of the ColorChecker Passport Video.

Video and Hue vs. Hue. That dip in blue is something we haven’t seen before.

6. Skin tones are leaning toward green in the vectorscope.

7. Boosted reds using eyedropper tool and Hue vs. Hue.

The collar of the tee shirt is a little hot, most likely because we went a little overboard pulling up the blue channel. The outro footage was processed in the same way, only we increased temperature, boosted saturation in the mids while decreasing it in the shadows and highlights and added grain for an even grittier look.
