Gunther Machu’s classification of the Canon C70 as a “consumer camera” is factually indefensible.
The Canon C70 is a dedicated professional digital cinema camera in Canon’s Cinema EOS lineup. It incorporates numerous features that distinguish it as a professional cinema camera, including:
- Dual Gain Output (DGO) sensor architecture, inherited from the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III.
- Built-in motorized ND filters.
- Dual 3-pin mini-XLR terminals with dedicated physical controls.
- Full-sized BNC timecode connectivity and physical audio switches.
- An isolated active cooling system for unlimited recording.
- Professional recording codecs, including XF-AVC and 12-bit Cinema RAW Light.
- Dual SD card slots for professional recording workflows.
- Shutter-angle.
By contrast, the Panasonic LUMIX S1II, GH6/GH7, and Sony A7R IV are hybrid stills/video cameras. Machu is conflating fundamentally different product categories.
Calling the Canon C70 a consumer camera isn’t just an innocent mistake. It’s a category error that calls into question whether the author even understands the distinction between a dedicated professional cinema camera and a hybrid stills/video camera.
- The Sony A7R IV does not use Dual Gain Output (DGO) or a dual-output gain architecture. It uses a dual native ISO implementation, which is a different technology.
